We joined Transportation Authority Chair Mandelman, Transportation Authority Vice Chair Melgar, Transportation Authority Board Member Engardio, SFMTA, San Francisco Public Works, and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission to celebrate the completion of the L Taraval Improvement Project.
This project transforms five miles of the Taraval corridor to enhance safety and improve reliability on the L Taraval and upgrade the corridor’s infrastructure and streetscape. The Transportation Authority contributed nearly $19 million from the sales tax program and Prop AA funds to support the efforts.
“Public transit is the backbone of San Francisco’s economy, and is at the core of a more equitable, accessible, livable city,” said Transportation Authority Board Chair and District 8 Supervisor Rafael Mandelman. “Congratulations to the SFMTA, SF Public Works and all the partners on the delivery of this important and beautiful project.”
Key project improvements include:
- Rail track and overhead line replacement
- Traffic signals
- Transit boarding islands
- Pedestrian bulb-outs
- High visibility crosswalks
- Elevated platforms
- Curb ramps
- Accessible pedestrian signals
- Water and sewer line replacement
- New trees and landscaping with public art
- Pavement renovation
- New streetlights and upgraded lighting
The L Taraval trains resumed service on September 28, providing riders with light rail service to and from the San Francisco Zoo/Ocean Beach through the Muni Metro Subway out to Embarcadero. This marks a major milestone in safer streets, improved accessibility, and better Muni service along the L-Taraval line.
