SFMTA and SF Public Works recently completed traffic calming enhancements in the Mission and Bernal Heights neighborhoods in District 9.

The Transportation Authority funded the design and construction of the traffic calming enhancements with $165,000 in transportation sales tax funds through our Prop L Neighborhood Program, at the request of District 9 Supervisor and Transportation Authority Board Member Hillary Ronen.

The locations and enhancements include:

Mission Neighborhood

  • Folsom Street, 20th Street to 22nd Street: four-speed cushions
  • Folsom Street at 21st Street: two traffic islands

Bernal Heights Neighborhood

  • Crescent Avenue, Mission Street to Leese Street: one-speed table
  • Crescent Avenue at Murray Street: one raised crosswalk

These enhancements will help to reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety for people walking and biking.

The locations were recommended by Transportation Authority Board Member Ronen's office, with input from SFMTA staff. The SFMTA accepts application-based requests for traffic calming improvements through their Residential Traffic Calming Program. The Transportation Authority has dedicated millions annually to support planning, design, and construction related to the traffic calming program with funding from San Francisco’s half-cent sales tax for transportation.
