This month, BART began installing the next generation of fare gates at Civic Center BART station after an initial new fare gate at the Civic Center platform elevator was installed and tested in April.
The new fare gates are designed to improve safety, customer experience, accessibility, reliability, and to deter fare evasion at BART stations.
BART plans to continue installing new fare gates at stations across the system in the coming months with the goal to finish all BART stations by the end of 2025. The next San Francisco BART station to receive the new fare gates will be 24th Street station.
The Transportation Authority is providing $12,525,000 in Prop L half-cent sales tax funding to support this $90 million project.
