On January 3 we celebrated the completion of the Safer Taylor Street project with District 8 Supervisor and former Transportation Authority Chair Rafael Mandelman, former District 5 Supervisor and Transportation Authority Board member Dean Preston, SFMTA, SF Public Works, Caltrans, Tenderloin Taskforce, and community partners.
The project’s new design will accommodate existing traffic on Taylor Street while improving traffic safety, access, and livability for some of the city’s most vulnerable populations.
The Transportation Authority contributed $2.5 million in funding from the sales tax program for the design phase and Quick Build project on Taylor Street.
Taylor Street is part of San Francisco’s Vision Zero’s High-Injury Network and is located within the Tenderloin District, an area that is disproportionately impacted by traffic collisions. The neighborhood is also historically underserved and is included within San Francisco’s Equity Priority Communities.
Throughout the development of the project, residents and key community leaders participated in making collaborative critical decisions, numerous unique events and meetings were held and more than 1,000 Tenderloin community members provided input.
The project includes:
- Widened sidewalks and curb extensions - Provides more public space for walking and shorter crosswalks
- Landscape and streetscape enhancements - Landscaping and art aesthetics, including neighborhood amenities
- Updated curbside loading zones
- Vehicle lane reduction - including traffic calming to enhance pedestrian safety and reduce roadway conflicts
