Last month, we joined San Francisco Recreation and Parks, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, State Senator Scott Wiener, District 5 Supervisor and Transportation Authority Board Member Bilal Mahmood, local agencies and community members to celebrate the groundbreaking improvements at Buchanan Street Mall.
Buchanan Street Mall is a pedestrian walkway and city park that spans a five-block section of the Western Addition from Eddy Street to Grove Street, and will transform the corridor into a safer, greener, and connected space for multi-generational recreation, arts, and culture.
Transportation Authority Board Member Mahmood thanked San Francisco Recreation and Parks and key partners for their support, and also highlighted the decade-long planning efforts and input from neighbors, local community leaders, and organizations to reimagine the five blocks of park space.
These efforts included the Western Addition Community Based Transportation Plan (2017), which recommended improving pedestrian connections between the blocks of Buchanan Mall in support of the future park improvements. The Transportation Authority was pleased to support the plan with $300,000 in transportation sales tax funds, and helped fund early delivery of sidewalk bulbouts, new ADA curb ramps, and flashing beacons along the corridor in 2022 with $676,000 in sales tax funds.
The full redesign led by SF Recreation and Parks and other agencies will include:
- A Memory Walk spanning all five blocks, featuring decorative paving, monumental gateways, historical storytelling, and public art
- Improved lighting, safety features, and landscaping to enhance accessibility and security
- New spaces for play, exercise, performances, and neighborhood events
- Kiosks for education and small business opportunities and more.
The full project is expected to be completed by 2026.
