Introduction

This planning study will focus on improving safety, accessibility, and overall experience at key intersections along Lincoln Way, next to Ocean Beach, including Lower and Upper Great Highway, La Playa Street, and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The project will explore ways to enhance connections for people walking, biking, and driving, with place-making features to create a more welcoming and enjoyable environment for everyone.

With future developments and the vision for a new Great Highway Park or promenade in mind, the study will incorporate multi-modal traffic counts, user observations, and landscape design concepts to guide a vibrant transformation of this area.

Project/Study Partners

This project is funded by the Transportation Authority’s Neighborhood Transportation Program and led by San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency

Goals

  • Enhance multi-modal safety and accessibility by improving intersection design, traffic circulation, and signal configurations.

  • Incorporate place-making and streetscape enhancements to make the area more welcoming, especially as a potential entrance to a promenade or park space.
  • Support improved wayfinding and transit connectivity for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.
  • Engage the community to ensure the project reflects local needs and gathers community input for proposed improvements.

Timeline and Status

Planning will begin in early 2025, with community engagement starting in spring. The final plan is expected to be complete by the end of 2025.

Cost and Funding
